Deadman

The CW is looking to Eric Kripke, the creator of long-running hit series Supernatural, to head up the creation of the network’s newest possible show, based on DC Comics’ Deadman character.

This news comes in the wake of Smallville‘s tenth and final season, and reportedly CW is on the lookout for a new superhero series, and Deadman is one of the projects that has potential.

If you’re not familiar with Deadman, let me catch you up. In the comics, Boston Brand was a circus daredevil who wore a red costume and corpse paint. Unfortunately for him, during a trapeze act one day, he was viciously gunned down by an unknown man. Fortunately for us, however, Boston Brand was reborn as the superhero ghost named Deadman. Deadman used his unique ability to transfer his spirit from body to body, including super-powered heroes and villains, to fight crime and find out the identity of his killer.

Personally, I really like this idea. Kripke has proven his talent with taking elements of the supernatural, adding humor, and pop culture references to create a popular, successful show. And with the potential given from the source material, he seems like the right choice for the job.

One of the greatest things about the later seasons of Smallville was the potential to see and hear about the massive DC Universe. Deadman‘s potential as a series is exciting not only because the character has a great premise — a dead carnival hero stuck somewhere between life and the afterlife — but also because of the potential DC cameos. For example, if this series sees the light of day, I’m certain that we’ll see the likes of the heroes from the upcoming Justice League Dark comic series like Madame Xanadu, Shade the Changing Man, and hopefully Zatanna, who we saw in Smallville.

The Deadman series has not been picked up yet by The CW, but I hope it does, because with Kripke behind the wheel, I think we’d all be in for a treat.
