Ever since Conan the Barbarian was first brought to life in 1932 by creator Robert E. Howard the character has endured the many decades since in books, comics, games, several films of varying quality, and on television in live-action and animated form. Conan has achieved great fame and success in every form of popular media short of being turned into a Broadway musical… until now.

Jon and Al Kaplan, the writers and composers of the off-Broadway hit Silence! The Musical, which was inspired by the movie Silence of the Lambs, have composed a rousing little Conan-themed ditty called “Crom!” and have created a video to go with the song comprised of clips from the 1982 Conan the Barbarian film. The Kaplan brothers have gained great Internet fame recently thanks to their musical treatments of films like Total Recall, RoboCop, Rambo, and even Schindler’s List. Most recently their song “Amy, Awake!”, inspired by the original Fright Night, went viral to coincide with the theatrical release of the 3D remake.

For “Crom!”, Al Kaplan sings the tune doing his best Arnold Schwarzenegger impression as he did on the Total Recall song. The song is suitably epic, extremely funny, and very reverential of the Conan legend, and the lyrics are fantastic. I would love to see this done as a full-blown musical on the Great White Way. If the creators of South Park can sweep the Tony Awards and conquer Broadway with The Book of Mormon, then anything is possible.
