The Bronx will welcome home Anthrax when the metal band returns to the borough next Wednesday for the highly anticipated Big 4 concert at Yankee Stadium.
The Bronx natives will perform live at the stadium, along with other metal giants Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer, and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. is pulling out all the stops to make them feel at home by officially declaring September 14 as “Anthrax Day in the Bronx.”
“The Bronx may be known as the home of hip-hop and salsa, but make no mistake, our musical contributions are much more expansive. These heavy metal legends grew up right here in our borough, and I am proud to welcome Anthrax back to their Bronx home,” said Borough President Diaz.
The New York City borough is expecting the concert to attract a lot of tourism, so local restaurants and bars will be offering up specials like “Metallica Martinis” and “Metal Mayhem Meatball” while piping in music from the four popular bands during the borough’s Metal Heads Welcome promotion.
Baltimore-based radio station 98Rock FM will also broadcast live from the neighborhood, capturing the energy and enthusiasm of the Bronx crowds gathered for this historic heavy metal event, according to a statement released by the office of the borough president.
The Doom crew will, of course, be present at the concert next Wednesday, but even if you don’t have tickets, you can still head down to the area and enjoy some heavy metal-themed dining and atmosphere. It’s not often you see something like “Metal Heads Welcome,” so I recommend taking advantage of this rare occasion to soak up the metal in the Bronx.
If you’re not in the area, you can always check out the first-ever Big 4 event on DVD or Blu-ray titled The Big Four: Live From Sofia, Bulgaria.
