Warhammer 40k: Space Marine

Do you salivate at the thought of slaying Orks? Are your dreams filled with thoughts of Chainswords (that is right, a sword that’s also a chainsaw)? Jet packs do anything for you? Are you ready and willing to save a Universe, but just don’t know where to start? Do you love the Warhammer 40k series?

Good news, my friends! Breakthrough video game technology has just been made available that can help you realize your wants and dreams, just as they’ve helped me.

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine was released on September 6 for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC. Sadly, I have not actually bought the game yet, but there is a free demo available on Steam.

Within the first five minutes of the demo you can pretty much tell if this is the kind of game you’d want to play. For many, it will be. It brings the feel of a few different game genres to a Universe as lush as any you’ve known. At its heart, it’s a well-crafted hack-n-slash game, yet at times feels like a shooter. It has great melee gameplay, but your guns matter at all times. The on-the-fly switching between slashing and shooting feels fluid, and more importantly, deadly. It has a kind of God of War feel to it, you know, if Kratos had lived in the future and used a chainsword.

The controls (I have only played the PC demo) are very simple and easy to remember. Something really awesome though, as a PC gamer, is that the demo allows you to set up custom mapping for all of your buttons. I know this seems like a small deal, but to have this kind of effort put into a demo says something about the game and its creators.

I can tell you that after playing the demo five times now I felt compelled to write this article. This game feels fun and it looks very pretty while doing it. As soon as this guy can afford the full game, this will likely be his next purchase. First, I’m off to slay the “visit your girlfriend” game before I can save the World from floods of Orks. Soon though, I will become a Chainsword master.
