Again I am pleased to be able to review what I consider one of the best new comics out these days. It amazes me how someone can take something so huge and make it seem even bigger. Chris Roberson manages to continue to convey a sense of vastness to this series by continuing to keep multiple storylines moving at a fast pace. You feel a sense of continuity and yet also feel as if the characters are eons and lightyears apart, which they are…probably. That’s the trouble with time travel, it’s hard to determine not just where you are but also when…
My favorite parts of Elric: The Balance Lost #3 were the locations: New Orleans (a couple of different ones, mind you), London, and a few others that I won’t spoil for you. Watching Elric, Corum, Hawkmoon, and Eric in their various timelines interacting with old and new places and people really makes this series come alive. There are so many things going on that you might find yourself going back and forth staring at the wonderful art that Francesco Biagini was kind enough to create.
This month’s chapter seems to be all about the journey. We get to see new places and people while moving the plots forward. Each character has taken several steps along the path, but a couple get to bear witness to their own uniqueness in some way. Swords, horns, and magical steeds are presented in one form or another. The reader is quickly immersed in Moorcockian-styled worlds and deeds. I take it back. That is my favorite part. The fact that the writer has so perfectly captured the style of the original books is just amazing.
If you love a twisting plot and high fantasy, then this is the series for you. BOOM! Studios has barely had this book out for three months and I have had several friends tell me that once they bought it they were hooked and a few even started rereading the novels (like I am currently). This is my third review for this series and I can only stress that there is enough action to keep the casual reader interested, but it contains so much more. The writing is a dead ringer for Michael Moorcock‘s and the art is worthy all on its own, but the combination is breathtaking. But if you can’t just take my word for it then I have just two words for you: Meat Boat. Curious now?
