Writer Garth Ennis has a history of creating characters who like to get violent from time to time, and his new series, Jennifer Blood features just such a character. Jennifer Blood is a housewife by day and a killer by night, hunting down mobsters and other criminals and dispatching them with brutal efficiency. The series has got all of Ennis’ trademark outlandish characters and some of the old ultra-violence. From what I’ve read, it seems like a fun series with tons of action.
Jennifer Blood feels a lot like one of Ennis’ Punisher comics, just with a female lead. It’s not as hard boiled as his Punisher run was, but most of Ennis’ comics have a tongue in cheek humor to them, and that is on display here. There is a fair bit of humor mixed in with the action, and there is the perfect balance between the two. The art in the book by Marcos Marz impressed me a great deal. There is a lot of detail to the art, and it looks like a mix between Amanda Conner (at least when it comes to his female figures) and Frank Quitely.
This is a fun comic, and fans of Ennis’ earlier works like Preacher should get a lot of enjoyment out of this. It’s not reinventing the wheel, but there are a few interesting characters, some exciting situations, and some great art. Jennifer Blood #4 is getting a 4 out of 5 from me.
