Guitarist William Garland is back to playing music once again, but not to the level of fame where he once was.

In 27: Second Set Issue #1, William Garland returns to his former life: playing guitar and being passionate about the music. Unfortunately, Garland isn’t as famous as he once was. He thinks his life is just as bad as when he couldn’t play guitar at all. Garland craves the fame of being known and wants it badly. When an accident happens with the magical contraption built into his chest, Garland uses its power to catapult himself back into the limelight but unknowingly catches the eyes of a villain.

The previous 27 miniseries was a favorite of mine earlier this year and I was hoping for another volume of the series. I got my wish. 27: Second Set is an excellent start to what seems to be another thrilling ride. William Garland seems to be obsessed with getting back to his famous status that he once claimed, but is causing a lot of road bumps along the way.

Writer Charles Soule definitely has a handle on the character of William Garland. From the first issue alone, Soule is setting up a bigger world with this character and it looks to be an interesting adventure.

With the art team of Renzo Podesta and W. Scott Forbes, they have both taking their art to a new level. Podesta is switching up his art style just a little for the interiors. Instead of the more Impressionistic style that he had in the first miniseries, Podesta has added more details in the character images as well as the backgrounds. Forbes has also stepped up his covers. With each cover, Forbes is paying homage just as he did with the first miniseries. In the first volume, Forbes used iconic musical members of the infamous 27 club. With the new miniseries, Forbes is using album covers of notorious one-hit wonders in music.

Overall, the new miniseries, 27: Second Set, is a fun and exciting addition to an already excellent predecessor. If you haven’t checked out the first 27 miniseries, then I highly recommend it. If you have read it and you’re a fan of comics about music, then 27: Second Set really should be added to your comic purchases. It’s definitely worth a read.

27: Second Set #1 will be released in comic book shops on September 14, 2011.
