Marvel Announces Collected Stories on the Marvel Comics App
space
Culturesmash   |

Invincible Iron Man Five Nightmares CoverComixology, the creators of the Marvel Comics app, has been offering graphic novels from independent publishers on its version of the app for some time. If you are interested in catching up on The Walking Dead, for instance, rather than buying all of those individual issues you can buy the graphic novels each as they were released on good old fashioned paper.

Now, finally Marvel has listened to fans and begun releasing “collections.” You can grab a bunch of them right now!

“We’ve heard the fans asking for collections on the app and we’re happy to deliver them today at an unbeatable price,” said Peter Phillips, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Marvel Digital Media Group. “This is only the beginning of some exciting new developments to make the Marvel Comics app an even bigger success.”

The collections currently available on the app are:

Astonishing X-Men Vol.1: Gifted
Captain America: Winter Soldier Vol.1
Invincible Iron Man Vol.1: Five Nightmares
New Avengers Vol.1: Breakout
Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage
Thor By J. Michael Straczynski Vol.1
Ultimate Spider-Man Vol.1: Power and Responsibility
Ultimate Fantastic Four Vol.1: The Fantastic
Ultimates Vol. 1: Super-Human
Ultimate X-Men Vol. 1: The Tomorrow People

“From the moment Marvel made history as the first major publisher to enter the digital comics space in 2007 to this momentous announcement today, our goal has always been the same-grow this industry,” explained David Gabriel, Marvel Senior Vice President of Sales. “For this launch we’ve chosen some of our top collections that we’re confident will both resonate with new readers and encourage them to visit their local comic shop via an ad in each collection.”

A quick perusal of the app shows the prices to range from $10 to $25, basically the same as their print counterparts. A lower price would have been nice but as the quote above makes apparent Marvel really doesn’t want to further enrage retailers. Does the possibility of getting a graphic novel digitally make you want to go into a shop and buy more or does it just make you want to buy more digitally? Sound off in the comments and let us know!

  1. Old titles, same price as paper (that you can find for cheaper prices at online dealers): fail.

At least, indies stories are cheaper than the TPB. I just bought Echoes, The Surrogates on Comixology. They are cheaper than TPBs and cheaper than separate monthly issues.

I think digital can’t be the same price as paper. Even on Same Day As Print. I know it makes retailers unhappy but they have to put some incentive to keep their customers, who in turn should stay loyal to their LCS.

  2. FINALLY!!! Now…if they get trades up on the app same day as the physical copies, we’d be set!

  3. Whats this paying for digital comics… they’re free.  Pay for them… haha, same price as print… hehehe, that’s just silly talk.  I’ll pay for digital the day they send me the Print copy for free… thank you very much.
