Foo Fighters Respond To Westboro Baptist Church Protests By Playing Show For Picketers

On Friday night, the Foo Fighters played a show at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri, and on hand to show their own special brand of support were members of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church, who brought out their trusty signs and hate-filled chants to express their umbrage at any person, group, or organization that doesn’t share their black-hearted hostility towards homosexuals. In their own puckish manner, the Foos decided to show their appreciation for the Westboro group’s venom by putting on a special concert just for them. They filmed the performance and their preparation and you can watch the video of it all here below.

The band — frontman Dave Grohl, bassist Nate Mendel, guitarist Chris Shiflett, guitarist Pat Smear, and drummer Taylor Hawkins — dressed up for the occasion like rednecks and performed a special song written just for their Westboro “fans” called “Keep It Clean.” They set up an impromptu stage on the back of a flatbed pick-up decked out with bales of hay and draped with American flags. The Westboro protesters were clearly not pleased by the song, which mocked their anti-gay beliefs, but towards the end of the video one of them actually said, “I love that song!” What a sweetheart.

Westboro, led by the virulent Reverend Fred Phelps, has become the center of controversy over the years since they started picketing the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Recently they have turned up at sporting events and rock concerts; they picketed performances by bands like Less Than Jake, All Time Low, and Taking Back Sunday, and on October 15th they will return to the Sprint Center to protest a basketball game between the Houston Rockets and the Miami Heat.

  3. Why couldn’t they have just stuck with noncontroversial protests like outing people that died of AIDS at their funerals or picketing the funerals of murder victims? We can all get behind that!
