BOOM! Studios To Bring ‘Key of Z’ To NYCC

BOOM! Studios and Evil Ink! Comics began rolling out their New York Comic-Con schedule this week, and one of the most prominent releases is Chondra Echert and Coheed and Cambria frontman Claudio Sanchez‘s Key of Z comic book series.

The comic stars Nick Ewing, a man who has lost everything as a result of gang warfare in a zombie-infected New York City. Which, yes, we’ve seen a lot of stories about surviving in a post apocalyptic world, and more specifically, stories about surviving the impending Zombie Apocalypse. But one thing that makes this one stand out is that this isn’t a survival story, it’s a revenge story.

Lead character Nick Ewing is on a mission to take his own brand of justice against the gangs who took everything away from him. And you know, the entirety of the comic takes place in a big city, which in my opinion are the most exciting parts of zombie stories, and using New York as a landscape is a great idea. New York City is an incredibly rich setting. If the massive number of people living in the city were to be infected with a zombie virus, well then you’re pretty much screwed if you’re just trying to survive.

Sanchez and Echert previously wrote Kill Audio, one of my favorite comics, which was a truly unique story about the death of creative works. Sanchez has even more comic credits to his name including The Amory Wars, which recently wrapped up it’s latest maxi-series In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3, a comic that featured interior art from Chris Burnham, who has gone on to sign an exclusive contract to DC Comics, as well as Aaron Kuder who finished out the series once Burnham left. After impressing fans of the series, like myself, and obviously Boom! Studios and Sanchez, Kuder has signed on to do all the interior artwork for Key of Z, while cover duties will be handled by Nathan Fox, whose brand new front and back cover of issue #1 is featured at the top of this article. Pretty cool, huh?

We’ve covered the announcement previously, but the time is getting closer for it to hits stands on October 19, the Wednesday after New York Comic-Con. But if you’re at the show, you can pick up an advanced copy of the book with a variant, NYCC-exclusive cover by Declan Shavley (28 Days Later, Thunderbolts), while there will be a baseball themed variant from The Walking Dead‘s Tony Moore. More details of their NYCC presence including Sanchez’s appearance on the Batman: Arkham City panel, as well as more information about Key of Z, can be found at the Evil Ink’s official website.

One thing’s for sure, from this creative team, you’re going to get a comic like nothing you’ve ever read before, so make sure to keep this book on your radar.
