OK, let’s face it, there’s a lot of people out there who think licensed comics are inferior. To them, I say pick up a copy of Transformers #27 and then get back to me. This issue has everything you want in a Transformers comic: Autobots wage their battle to destroy the evil forces of the Decepticons.

Writer Mike Costa and IDW set the stage right off the back with a RECAP page!!!! People argue that the recap of the storyline should be told in the first few pages of the comic, but WHY waste the time when you’ve got so much story to tell? It’s a great, single paragraph that brings you up to date on what’s been going on, without talking down to you or making you feel bad if you haven’t read the previous issues. But, I’m telling you, if you haven’t read the previous issues — shame on you! You’re missing a fantastic comic.

Let’s be honest, 9 out of 10 times in a Transformers comic, the worst part of the story is the humans. Not this time! Mike Costa does a fantastic job of making us actually want to read and be involved in what’s going on with cast of humans just as we do the Transformers.

Artist Mike Cahill, to put it simply, knocks it out of the park with this issue. His art is great and he makes the humans and robots look like they actually belong in the same universe, which has been rarely accomplished before in Transformers comics. He’s also highly skilled at drawing the robots in action comprehensively. A lot of times, in Transformers comics, the action is VERY hard to follow, but not here. IDW has found the perfect artist for this book, I hope they keep him around for a long, long time.

All in all, this book is a solid, fun, action heavy, good time. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Even if your not a Transformers fan, you’re still going to walk away happy.
