Iran Sentences Actress Marzieh Vafamehr To 90 Lashes For Movie Role

My Tehran for Sale

Iranian actress Marzieh Vafamehr has been sentenced to 90 lashes for her role in the 2009 Australian film My Tehran for Sale. The actress, who was arrested in July and sentenced by the court this past weekend, appeared in the movie without a headscarf on and a shaved head, and the story involved both drug use and an observation of Iran’s oppressive ways.

In a cruel twist of irony, Vafamehr played the lead in the film, also named Marzieh, an actress in Tehran whose theatre work is banned by the government, forcing her to lead a secret life in order to pursue her passions. One night she meets a fellow Iranian named Saman who now resides in Australia and offers her a chance to also escape the everyday fears of being who you want to be that come with living there.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported on the sentencing, saying “In an outcome that could have been lifted from the pages of the movie’s script…the film’s lead actress, Marzieh Vafamehr, was arrested in July and received her sentence at the weekend, according to reports quoting Iranian opposition website kalameh.com.”

Director Granaz Moussavi had no response to the situation, as he is respecting the wishes of Vafamehr’s family.

  1. Yanno IRAN does this kind of thing, Just to Get a rise out of the West, They Torture thier people and count of Western Ignorance of culture to outrage us, and we get angry at them.   Maybe we should focus our passion to sympathy for her, Treat IRAN like impudent and petulent Children, pay as little attention as possibile to Them, and isolate them.

  3. That’s cruel Iran’s goverment is. And Liberals complain about waterboarding when interrogating detainees which is a different issue. Waterboarding is nothin compared to what this woman would endure. But this must not be such a big deal to the UN unless of-course America is doin it, right Libs? It’s too bad this Iranian woman is being treated this way but i can’t imagine why she went back to Iran in the first place, knowing what could happen because of her acting in a film.

  4. How do you place this repressive conservative government on liberals? That makes no sense. You’re twisted. How do you measure our failings and our violation of human rights against a country that also violates human rights? Because they violate them worse? That’s how you measure our success by matching it ups against another’s failings? No wonder the US is doomed.

  19. Where are the women libbers? Where is NOW? No word from the feminists. Just shows how gutless they are. They want to protest in the safety and protection of the U.S., a country that goes out of its way to protect human rights (except for the IRS and Tea Baggers/Jews) when the real horrors against women are committed in countries like Iran. Come on girls! Get some steel in your spines. Go to Iran and protest. Burn your bras. Get it on with those mean misogynist Iranian men who are whipping women.

Do you have some examples of liberal feminists speaking out strongly against Islamic gender apartheid? I’d like to think that this is a non-partisan issue, but I’ve seen how the “free Palestine” movement tends to ignore Islamic oppression, in order to promote the president’s religion of peace lie and hide the true nature of Islam.

  36. Ok I got your link to ms. Magazine. I looked through all 289 links and it appears that this issue vanished with the coronation of Barack Obama. Very few links since 2008.
I am more convinced than ever, that liberal women don’t care about this at all.
Pathetic. No wonder you want to blow me off. You got nothing.
One article referred to gender apartheid at Augusta national!
This is just not an issue with liberals. Thanks for the link. Most leftists just spew and leave.

  38. Waterboarding was done to three very stubborn and very evil men. They talked and their confessions led to the killing of OBL and thwarted future attacks.
The lashing of this woman was for disobeying the psychotic edicts of a seventh century misogynist, pedophile, and murderer.

  40. BLACK AND WHITE THINKING IS WHAT YOU, SIR, ARE A VICTIM OF…nobody is equating these things at all !!

It’s clear you’re not someone who worries about trying to be rational. Because two things are both wrong does not imply they’re similar.

I’d recommend taking a logic 101 course but of course you are someone who always must be right, even when you’re wrong, so it’s foolish of me to think you might actually “get” anything…

I know when something’s hopeless, so won’t be wasting anymore of my time.

    Comment by suetiggers — May 28, 2013 @ 10:08 pm

  41. Read your own post! You said the same mentality that approves waterboarding approves lashing women due to the wishes of a long dead madman. Nonsense.
    Your indigation is not warranted.
And your ms magazine list of liberal women against gender apartheid was appalling. I thought there’d be at least one article expressing outrage. I was wrong.

If you truly cared about the plight of Muslim women under brutal sharia law, you might ask me for the names of some of the amazing conservative feminists who are fighting the good fight.
But your ideology won’t allow it.
So I believe this remains an issue for conservative women only.
Unless you can convince me otherwise

  44. So? This is 2013 and Marzieh would be better off if the Shah was still here. Besides, who says that Khomenei and his supporters would have hated the successors of secular Mossadegh any less than they hated the Shah?

  45. It is my experience that feminism in the West has become doctrinaire leftwing, illiberal and reflexively anti-western. They do not like to criticize non-western cultures. Sure, there will be exceptions. Are you one?

    Comment by Earl_of_Effingham — June 8, 2013 @ 3:51 pm

  46. No, it would be the same as us arresting such a person and then torturing her until she is near death. In other words, very different.

  52. This sentence was overturned on appeal, as reported by the HuffPo on 10/29/2011. No lashes, and she was released from jail. Not that I think lashing isn’t utterly barbaric, but it would be nice if web sites would remove links to this now defunct story.

    Comment by Marbran — June 19, 2013 @ 2:01 pm

  53. Yes, liberals are always the “sophisticated” thinkers, aren’t they? Well, except when it came to Benghazi. While the President contemplated his navel in deep thought, 4 men in service to this nation died horrible deaths. Obama’s best thinking didn’t get us very far did it? Ever heard of the word, “sophistry”?
