Millennium Trilogy Graphic Novels

DC/Vertigo comics has announced that they are planning to release a comic adaptation of Stieg Larsson‘s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, along with the other two books in Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy.

Starting in 2012, readers will be able to pick up the adaptation of Dragon Tattoo, with The Girl Who Played with Fire launching in 2013, and finally The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest dropping in 2014. Details such as the creative team or pricing is not yet available, but DC did announce that each book would be split into two graphic novels and that they would see release in both print and digital forms. This is pretty big news and is an exciting announcement for DC.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was originally published in Sweden in 2005, shortly after the passing of the author. All three novels went on to gain a lot of attention and also went on to be best sellers worldwide. Attention on the books was increased when they were adapted into a series of films in their native Sweden and are set to receive even more attention when the American adaptation of the film, directed by David Fincher and staring Daniel Craig, is released this December.

“The intricate characters and stories Larsson created in the Millennium Trilogy are a perfect match for the graphic novel format, where we can bring Lisbeth Salander to life in entirely new, visually compelling ways,” stated Dan DiDio, co-publisher of DC Entertainment in a statement released today. “It’s a distinct honor to work on a story that is already so popular with millions of readers around the world.”

I wish that DC had given some indication of who would be the creative team, at least for the first book. With luck, they may release more information at this weekend’s New York Comic-Con, but my guess is that DC/Vertigo may still be looking for the right team to work on the books. We’ll know more this weekend and will be sure to let you know as soon as we hear anything.
