GoD List Banner

Each and every week “The Spider” Henchman21 and “The Microwave” MK2FAC3 read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. They look forward to some more than others, I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of their pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of October 12, 2011. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

The ‘Wave is busy traveling to New York Comic-Con, so he’s a little preoccupied this week, what with packing his Batman costume and making sure he has enough Batarangs with him so he can fight crime on the streets of the real Gotham city, so it’s just your friendly neighborhood Henchman this week (I’m already stationed here in NYC for the week). “Wavey Gravy” does want to make sure you know about The All-New Batman: The Brave and the Bold #12, out this week featuring a team-up with Zatanna. Because it wouldn’t be a GoD list without MK talking about a Batman comic. Here are a few books I am looking forward to this week.

Issues

Tha ShadeThe Shade #1 (of 12) (DC Comics – $2.99 ) I didn’t read James Robinson‘s Starman when it was originally coming out, but I have caught up on it now, thanks to DC’s release of the Starman omnibi, and boy am I glad that I was able to read the series. Not only because it is a great series that every comic fan should read (which it is), but also because it allows me to be caught up in time to read this series. In Starman, Robinson transformed The Shade from A-list villain into one of the most interesting characters in the DC Universe. He is a killer, but he lives by a certain code that sometimes forces him to act like a hero. Or is he a hero that sometimes does evil things? That is the question that has always haunted Robinson’s take on the character. This series takes The Shade on a globe-trotting adventure that promises tp shed some light on his origins. The art on this issue is by Cully Hamner, who has done some magnificent work in the past and I expect just as much in this issue. The Starman corner of the DC universe seems to be where Robinson is at his most comfortable, and I think this is going to be up to the standards that he set when he was writing that landmark series.

Black Panther: The Most Dangerous Man Alive #524 (Marvel Comics – $2.99) I talk about Black Panther a lot, mostly because it is a great series that I don’t think enough people are reading. If you haven’t been reading the series, but are reading the Spider Island story over in Amazing Spider-Man, this is a great place to check out the series to see if you enjoy it, since this is a Spider Island tie-in. The big draw here is the art by Francesco Francavilla, who is one of the best artists working in comics today. His dark and moody style is the perfect match for writer David Liss‘ story. Liss has taken the Black Panther and taken him in a new direction as the protector of Hell’s Kitchen. The series has been filled with action and interesting characters and is a ton of fun to read. Give this issue a try and see if you enjoy it as much as I do.

American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest #5 (of 5) (DC/Vertigo Comics – $2.99) This is more of a recommendation for all of American Vampire than it is a recommendation to pick up this specific issue, although you should pick up this specific issue as well. Writer Scott Snyder has done what many didn’t think possible; take vampires and make them cool again. His tale of a new breed of vampires and the people drawn into the twisted web of vampire in-fighting never fails to impress. Survival of the Fittest has been especially impressive, mostly because of the art by Sean Murphy, but also because it has freaking Nazi vampires, and there is no bad comic ever that has Nazi vampires in it. The mini-series wraps up with this issue and according to the solicitation it will have a “huge impact” on the over-arching story. In this case, I believe that it will have massive ramifications on the story. American Vampire is an amazing series, and it is a book that anyone who likes good stories will enjoy.

Trade:

There are a lot of great trades and graphic novels out this week, including new works from Daniel Clowes, a new volume of 20th Century Boys, and the HC of the AMAZING “Frank” storyline from PunisherMax, but the trade I’m looking forward to most is:

Black Metal Vol. 2 (Oni Press – $11.99) – I got a lot of enjoyment out of the first Black Metal when it came out a few years ago. It was full of manic energy and some great art by Chuck BB. Black Metal is the story of the Brothers Stronghand, a couple of hard rock loving reincarnated demons who get tasked with finding a demonic sword and fighting off hordes of monsters. The second volume has been in the works for a while and I know I will need to re-read the first volume, but that’s hardly a problem. BB’s art is sharp and has an animated quality to it, and it is perfectly suited to the story. This is a fun comic with some great black and white art, and will appeal to anyone looking for something a little different to read this week. This is the most fun you will have with a comic this week.
