The Crow

Relativity Media’s long-in-development reboot of The Crow, based on James O’Barr‘s 1989 independent comic book miniseries, has seen its fair share of talent attach and detach from this troubled project since it was first announced nearly three years ago.

First Stephen Norrington, the director of Blade and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, was given the directing reigns with screenwriter/musician Nick Cave (The Proposition) on scripting duty, but both left the project when the development stalled.

Then it was announced that Mark Wahlberg would be playing the title role, a casting decision that rankled the hardcore devoted fans of the character, only for the Oscar-nominated actor to take a hike shortly after only to be replaced by Bradley Cooper (The Hangover), who also soon left the project to star in Paradise Lost (to be directed by Alex Proyas, the filmmaker who broke through in Hollywood with the 1994 adaptation of The Crow).

The most recent developments on the reboot had Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, the director of the 2007 zombie apocalypse sequel 28 Weeks Later, replacing Norrington in the director’s chair with Alex Tse (Watchmen) scripting and Wahlberg rumored to assume the role of Eric Draven, the rock musician turned white makeup-wearing rolling rampage of revenge. But now Fresnadillo has become the latest casualty of the reboot that keeps struggling to rise from the bowels of Development Hell. There has been no clear reason given yet as to why the director walked off the project but it has been rumored that he would be signing on to direct another the remake of Highlander.

No new director has been announced by Relativity yet but one of the possibilities is rumored to be F. Javier Gutierrez, the director of the 2008 Spanish apocalyptic drama Before the Fall.
