After reading issue Transformers #27 and LOVING it, I have to admit, Transformers #28 was a bit of a let down. It was by no means terrible or unreadable or anything even close to that. But, it did have a couple of problems that kept me from enjoying it as much as I wanted to.

Story-wise, this issue is a lot of fun. Cover to cover action and it features what most of us Transformers fans love — no humans! Mike Costa and James Roberts deliver what every TF fan wants — all-out war between the Autobots and Decepticons — with a few really nice twists thrown in for good measure. All of our favorite characters each get an equal amount of “screen time,” while the story advances at a good pace. Fans of this series will definitely enjoy this chapter in the Chaos storyline.

Unfortunately, where the book suffers is in the art department. While artist Livio Ramondelli is a perfectly capable artist, I just don’t know if he’s the right choice for this book. Transformers, at least the robots, should be drawn in a clean style, and need to be instantly recognizable. Let’s be honest, a lot of them look a lot alike and when you throw the transformations in their, it can get quite confusing. Ramondelli’s style is just not quite “clean” enough for this, in my opinion. The other problem I had was the coloring. Throughout the book, there’s a weird hazy, smokey look. While I realize that it’s all out war and there’s supposed to be smoke from the constant explosions and gunfire, it’s really distracting, and in the end, I think the book suffers a bit from that as well.

Even with the problems I had with Transformers #28, it is by no means, a terrible comic. I just wish the art and look of the book was different, it would’ve made this good comic a great comic.
