It’s being reported that Fox Broadcasting, along with Sony Pictures Television, is developing a new TV series based on the hit 2009 horror–comedy, Zombieland, with screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick involved as well.
The movie starred Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin as survivors of the zombie apocalypse who cross paths on their way to different destinations.
For those who don’t know, CBS initially ordered a pilot episode of a Zombieland series back in 2005 but that eventually fell through, opening the door for a movie which went on to become a surprise hit, bringing in over $100 million in worldwide box office.
At the moment, the plan appears to be to jump on the already existing popularity of zombies on TV seen with AMC’s The Walking Dead, which wasn’t there in ’05. But instead of competing with that show, the proposed Zombieland series would be more of a comedy and each episode would only run 30 minutes. If all goes well, the hopes are to have the show ready for the 2012–2013 season.
But with this potentially good news comes some bad news, as well. It appears that if a Zombieland TV series is made, the long–planned movie sequel, Zombieland 2, would not happen, according to producer Gavin Polone.
I don’t know about you but a zombie comedy on Fox sounds a little cheesy””I’d much rather see a movie sequel with the stars and humor the first movie was able to offer than some kind of zombie sitcom. Perhaps that’s just me.
What are your thoughts on a Zombieland TV series? Would you prefer it over a sequel to the movie?
Well, the writers did originally plan for it to be a TV series (‘Zombie Kill of the Week’ and all) and the pacing of the movie did feel a lot like several episode of a series put together. Â Taking all that into consideration, perhaps a series might be better than another movie.
I think I’m OK with a Zombieland TV series from FOX but…it needs to be an FX presentation. It can be funny but zombie jokes get tired pretty quickly, so we’ll need to see some drama too. As a sitcom on Fox (the broadcast station), a Zombieland series won’t work. As an hour long dramatization with some elements of irony, humor, sarcasm, etc (like the movie), I’d watch it! Otherwise I fear something dreadful like that Cavemen series that was adapted from GEICO commercials. LOVE those commercials but as a sitcom? Bleh
Mistake. You can’t beat that cast – which is really what made Zombieland such a hit, and they’re not going to do a tv show. Do the sequel. But they won’t. The jerks wouldn’t even let Abigail Breslin appear as zombie in one scene after she begged to do it. Why say no to that girl?
