Watch Now: New ‘Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol’ Trailer
  |

The lackluster box office grosses (not a flop, but not a good omen either) for the 2006 sequel Mission: Impossible III had the studio suits at Paramount questioning the future of the once-viable tentpole action franchise, but after more than five years the blockbuster movie series is back with Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

The second trailer for the movie has been released and you can watch it here below.

The first trailer did what a good teaser should do: give us minimal exposition and lots of little glimpses of the whiz-bang action set pieces that bring in the crowds. Not much is expanded on in this new preview but we get a little more interaction with the characters (I like the interplay between Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg) and an extra bit of the story, including a possibly spoilery moment for Tom Wilkinson‘s character. The film’s action centerpiece – Ethan Hunt (Cruise) scaling Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building – gets some additional play here as well. This is part of the reported 30 minutes of footage that were shot in glorious IMAX.

Judging from this trailer the live-action directing debut from Brad Bird (The Incredibles) looks to be a ton of outsized globe-trotting fun. Plus it could do wonders for Bird’s career; Mission: Impossible III may not have been the ginormous smash Paramount was banking on it to be but it gave them the confidence to allow director J.J. Abrams (who returns for producing duties on Ghost Protocol) to take the reigns of the 2009 Star Trek reboot.

I have a few questions about the movie though. First, Ving Rhames, who has appeared as Luther Stickell in all three previous Mission: Impossible movies, is among the cast credits on Ghost Protocol‘s IMDB page but doesn’t appear in any of the trailers. The official plotline mentions an attack on IMF headquarters which results in Ethan and his team being forced to go on the run to clear their names. Does Luther die in this attack?

Second, what’s the deal with Josh Holloway‘s character? He is supposedly a member of Ethan’s team but is never seen in the group shots with Cruise, Pegg, Paula Patton, and Jeremy Renner (playing a character with mysterious motives). Holloway has a few fleeting badass moments in the trailer. Does he get offed early in the movie? Is he a rogue agent operating on his own? Or could he be one the villains? Which brings me to my final question….

Does this movie have an antagonist? Lea Seydoux (Inglourious Basterds) and Michael Nyqvist (the original The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo)have been named as the villains of Ghost Protocol, but who the hell are they? Something tells me there’s a lot more to this story than we’re being let on, and that could be a very good thing for this movie. An unexpected plot twist usually leads to repeat viewings and great box office. Maybe I’m reading too much into these trailers. In any case my interest in this movie just keeps going up, and no it’s not in the form of an erection…yet.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol opens on December 21, 2011.

  2. Ok. Few things.
1.Tom is luking as awesome as always. No need to replace him in the nxt MI movie as the rumours are suggesting.
    2. Jeremy renner looks an idiot. I don’t know what’s he even doing in Hollywood. Besides he doesn’t have the guts to replace Tom. So don’t even think abt it. Tom still looks younger than renner.
    3. I am worried about Josh holloway. Why the hell did they sync his appearance in the trailer with the dialogue “we don’t come back” in the background?? I hope he has a kick-ass role in the movie. You sure can’t pick up a sawyer for a movie and kill him early especially when J. J. Abrams is one of the exec. producer.
