This introductory issue to Kaboom’s ongoing Peanuts monthly features two new stories and four classic Peanuts strips. Realistically, maybe they shouldn’t have packaged new stories with the classic ones. At times, the difference is pretty jarring.

Now, let’s be honest here. Trying to follow the work of Peanuts creator Charles Schulz has got to be a daunting, to say the least, task. Schulz not only created these beloved characters, he drew every single Peanuts strip for almost 50 years.

Writers Ron Zorman and Vicki Scott get an “A” for effort with there stories, but they come up a little short. Scott’s Woodstock story is my favorite of the two. Zorman’s story is cute, but to me, the characterization was a tad off. Charlie Brown is not quite, as Linus would say, “Charlie Browny” enough.

The art, also by Ron Zorman and Vicki Scott is pretty good. Everyone looks like they’re supposed to. There’s a page in Zorman’s story where Charlie Brown is shown in different outfits and that looks really out of place, but otherwise both stories look good.

While I can’t really recommend this comic enthusiastically, for $1, I suggest you pick it up, read the classic strips, and then give it to a kid. Granted, this book is NOT intended for me, a picky 38-year-old, but I really do think that kids will enjoy it and getting them introduced into the world of the Peanuts gang is certainly a good thing.
