GWAR Guitarist Cory Smoot aka Flattus Maximus Found Dead
  |

Guitarist for the long-time theatrical metal band GWAR, Cory Smoot aka Flattus Maximus, has been found dead by his band members on their tour bus, after departing a show in Minneapolis before heading to Canada. There is no word as to the cause of death. It is not known how old Smoot is.

The character of Flattus Maximus has been portrayed in GWAR by numerous musicians over the years, and Cory Smoot joined the band in 2002. He has played the character as part of the band for the longest out of all previous musicians who also took on the name.

Smoot played on the albums War Party, Beyond Hell, Lust In Space, and Bloody Pit of Horror, and also took on the role of producer for their two most recent studio releases.

GWAR were formed in 1984, following in the steps of Alice Cooper and KISS, becoming quickly known for their on-stage gory antics, their “in-universe” sci-fi/horror characterizations, and for emphasizing their music and theatrical stage presence with a dark humorous focus on subjects considered to be taboo.

Dave Brockie aka Odorus Urungus released the following statement today:

It is with a sense of profound loss and tragedy that the members of GWAR must announce the passing of their long time guitarist and beloved friend Cory Smoot, also known to thousands of metal fans worldwide as Flattus Maximus. Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing.

There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of GWAR are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred. At this point there is no word on arrangements and the disposition of the remainder of GWAR’s current North American tour, nor are there any details regarding long term plans.

At this point we are just dealing with the loss of our dear friend and brother, one of the most talented guitar players in metal today. We ask that our fans and the media be respectful of our request for privacy for those that have suffered this terrible loss. A full statement will be coming in the next day or so, in the meantime please give your thoughts and your prayers to Cory, his family, and all the people that love him.

-Dave Brockie-

The loss of Cory Smoot is a huge one, not just for GWAR, but for the metal fan community as well. He will be remembered for his solid contributions to the band during the 2000’s.

RIP Cory Smoot

  1. Rest in Cory Smoot, a.k.a. Flattus Maximus.  You frakking rocked, you were a good metal soldier right up to the end!!!  I’ve seen GWAR five times in concert and they always put on one hell of a show.
