Snarked by Roger Langridge returns this week with its second issue. It’s an issue full of character development and surprising revelations that was a joy to read.

It is usually around its second issue most comics prove if they are going to continue in greatness or if its creator used all of their artistic brilliance in the first issue. Langridge luckily beats the sophomore slump with Snarked #2 and continues to take us on an unforgettable journey with a cast of charming and lovable characters.

Snarked #2 introduces us in further detail to some of the comic’s villains and rogues. The evil royal advisors are furious about Queen Scarlett’s escape with prince Rusty and send expert tracker The Gryphon to find them. It’s around this point that we begin to realize that the threat to the heroes of Snarked is much greater than anticipated, with bad guys hunting them in their own kingdom the queen and her charges are not safe anywhere. The introduction of The Gryphon proves again that Langridge is a master of character development; this is yet another character that is complex and hilarious as the rest of Queen Scarlett’s enemies. We are also shown that Wilburforce J. Walrus truly is a rogue with a heart of gold. Wilburforce agrees to finally help Queen Scarlett and her brother after seeing how truly sad she is about her missing father (of course the purse full of gold she is carrying helps his choice a bit as well).

As the cast of Snarked #2 embarks on their journey around the kingdom on market day we began to see the densely populated world Langridge has created. Citizens of the kingdom are unique and creative, from the knight that specializes in shadow puppets to the doughnut-selling giant chicken. As a master cartoonist Langridge is able to draw human and non-human characters so well that they blend together seamlessly. The kingdom of Snarked is a magical place full of wonder and in Snarked #2 Langridge gives us a glimpse of all the things to come.

If at any point you are scanning the rows of comics at your local shop and feel a little overwhelmed, the only thing I can suggest to you without fear of disappointment is Snarked #2. Of course it can be written off as just a kids book, but Snarked #2 is much more than that, it is great storytelling that is immensely fun to read.
