Amanda Palmer, Neil Gaiman, Moby & Stephin Merritt Perform ‘Rocky Horror’ Song

Fans of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson got a nice little seasonal surprise on last week on the Halloween episode when alt rocker Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls, author and comics (Sandman) scribe Neil Gaiman (also Palmer’s husband), techno music trailblazer Moby, and Stephin Merritt of the pop rock group the Magnetic Fields got together to perform “Science Fiction Double Feature,” the opening song from the stage and film musical versions of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

You can watch the performance video here below.

Needless to say this is a very bizarre take on a freaky classic tune. Before watching this video I was only moderately familiar with Palmer and Merritt. I enjoyed this cool performance as well as Moby’s deadpan lyric readings and Gaiman plinking away on a miniature piano. Perhaps this is the time for me to really start watching Craig Ferguson’s show; you definitely won’t find this stuff on Letterman or Leno.

I’ve also included the performance of “Over at the Frankenstein Place” with Ferguson and a rabbit hand puppet that opened the show.

  1. Not sure I understand the appeal of this? As a huge fan of Neil Gaiman and Moby, I *want* to think that there’s some kind of creative genius at work here…but I’m just not feeling it. The performance just feels kinda flat to me, maybe somewhat lifeless, which is sad because Craig Ferguson’s show generally has a lot of quirky charm to it even when the guests aren’t up to par. What am I missing?

  2. They probably never really had any time to put together anything to to spectacular. Why the three guys pretty much acted like some auto anamatronic figures out of Disneyland I do not know. Maybe they just figurd it was Amanda’s moment and let her be the focus.
