Much to the chagrin of two of my very good friends, who’ve been trying to get me to read this book for months, this was the first time that I’ve read The Sixth Gun. I have to admit, right off the bat, they were right. It’s, let’s just say, unique. And not in a weird or strange way, I mean it literally. I’ve never read a comic quite like this before.

Keeping in mind that this was the first time I’ve read this book, overall The Sixth Gun #16 was very enjoyable. This issue was part five of a story arc, but, for the most part, I was still able to understand what was going on. There were a few spots were I was a little confused, but nothing that kept me from having a great time reading this book.

Writer Cullen Bunn delivers a really good story, but I am totally confused on how to categorize this. Western? Horror? Suspense? Supernatural thriller? The answer is yes. And that’s what I was impressed with the most, just how different this comic is from anything else that’s on the stands today.

Artist Brian Hurtt is fantastic on this book. Not to beat a dead horse, but he has a couple of different ways of drawing ghosts and it changes about three times in the course of the issue, which left me a little confused. That’s the only problem that I had with the art, and I’m sure that long time readers of the book know the difference, but for me, it was a little misleading. Other than that, he does a great job and his style really brings a fun yet scary vibe to this book.

After reading this issue, I’m sorry that I procrastinated for 15 months before giving this a try. Fun, unpredictable, mysterious, and just plain all around good. If, like me, you’ve never picked up the title before, I highly recommend that you grab the trades and back issues and get caught up. I know that’s what I’ll be doing.
