Modern Warfare 3

Despite much drama and what looked like a significant potential fanbase loss, Activision has done it again, breaking the day-one video game release record for the third consecutive year with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

In its first 24 hours the game sold 6.5 million copies (including its record-breaking pre-orders), which equals out to $400 million. That breaks last year’s record of $360 million set by Call of Duty: Black Ops, and the prior year’s record of $310 million set by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

It’s estimated that by the end of the year Modern Warfare 3 will have over 20 million units sold, which would equal out to around $1.2 billion in sales. Black Ops hit the $1 billion mark in six months. It’s also said that the Call of Duty franchise as a whole has now surpassed both the Star Wars and Lord of the Rings franchises, if that tells you anything.

The feat is notable because after Activision dismantled Infinity Ward, many thought the Modern Warfare franchise was doomed. But the remaining Infinity Ward team with the help of Sledgehammer Games joined forces and appear to have knocked another one out of the park.

Quite the little rivalry had been born over the summer as jaw-dropping footage of EA’s competing title, Battlefield 3, had swarms of people swearing off Call of Duty and claiming loyalty to the prematurely declared new “king” of shooters. The new Battlefield has done well, hitting around 5 million copies sold in its first week, but the “rivalry” was quickly and cleanly put to sleep by the juggernaut that is Modern Warfare, which surpassed said first-week sales in one day.

Mini-feuds will rage on with different people preferring one or the other, but one thing has been reaffirmed with thunderous clarity: Modern Warfare remains an untouchable titan atop the mountain that is first-person shooters.

  1. You know what else sells alot to?……..Mcdonalds Double cheeseburgers! But you know what burger taste Better?……. In&out double doubles. Quality over quanity. This game sold alot but alot of people are pissed on how little anything changed. IW did nothing to hide it. If it aint broke dont fix it. True! But when you cant even change the sound effects or menu’s thats just being lazy. theres almost no coloring in the multiplayer. Everything looks grey. Ie Laziness. This cash cow isnt good for video gaming as a whole. Because activision and IW have all the the funds and means to push the game to its limits. But they refuse to. BF3 is pushing the console to the limits and trying bigger and better things and improving with every game. Its only a matter of time before people find out about Battlefield and if they keep Call of duty the same next year people are gonna start catching on to activisions BS! Tony hawk, guitar hero and next is call of duty. and 12 year olds are in love with this game cuz they were 8 when MW came out so they barely remember the similaritys from that game to this.

    MW3= Mickey d doubles!
    BF3= In&out Double Doubles

  2. $400 million in the US and England alone. That’s from 6.5 million copies sold in those two countries. I’ve read that worldwide the game sold 9.3 million in its first day. That means that it made about $570 million in its first day worldwide.

  3. Useless fanboys continue to ruin the gaming industry.  Battlefield 3 is the superior game in every category.  MW3 looks like they just used the old graphics engine and slapped a new story on it.

  4. I agree with clinton, i own both games, BF3 is the superior all around game.  Sales do not determine quality of a game

  6. Lol the bf fans are so bitchy I play neither games but get over it and hack it. If it was the better game it would have sold more since it’s apparently mOre fun bit it didn’t. Above all from war I’ve seen and heard battlefield 3 looks good but that’s it only LOOKS good nothing else :)

    Nothing personal :)

  7. Just because it sells more, just means there are more idiots out there. Modern Warfare constantly proves that people will buy the game just because it says Modern Warfare. So many complaints with modern warfare 3 that many people that used to love that game are going back to mw2 or swearing off MW games all together. Numbers aren’t everything, the community is raving and ranting and they’re all pretty upset by MW3
