The ‘Tomb Raider’ Reboot Will Be a Prequel, According To The Producer

The Tomb Raider reboot that entered development not long ago has yet to evolve beyond the embryonic stage, but recently producer Graham King (The Departed) discussed the likely direction the new film will likely be taking with in an interview with Coming Soon.

According to King, the new Tomb Raider adventure being scripted by the Children of Men and Iron Man screenwriting team of Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby will follow the current trend of reviving franchises by exploring the origins of the Lara Croft character, previously played in two films by Angelina Jolie.

“Listen, the box office, they weren’t disasters but I find it interesting that the story that we’re telling is really the story before she became Lara Croft, so it is a character piece. It does have a lot of really great characters, but it’s a lot of action and a lot of fun, and for me, it’s something very different. I’ve not really done a movie like that before, but I really gravitated to rebooting this franchise and we’re going to give it a shot.”

Hollywood’s fascination with prequels often leads to more misses than hits but when one gets it right the results are movies like Batman Begins, Casino Royale, and more recently X-Men: First Class and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. But the Tomb Raider movies were based on a successful series of video games less than two decades old, and films adapted from popular video games have a questionable track record in the industry.

Besides, I don’t necessarily see Lara Croft as the kind of complex character who needs an entire film devoted to showing how she got her start in raiding tombs. She wears tube tops and short shorts when exploring ancient ruins.
