In this first issue of the new Legend of Isis series, we jump right into the thick of the action. The problem is there’s not really any set up. So if you’ve never read this title before you’re going to be a little bit lost, as I was.

Writers Darren G. Davis and Kenton Daniels deliver some great action for a first issue, most of the time premiere issue are all set up with about two pages of action at the very end of the book. In this case, I really think that that formula might have helped them a little.

As I said, we jump right into the action with no clue given if this is a direct continuation of a previous series or a brand new adventure. Halfway through, we get a tiny peak at the heroine’s secret identity and a little clue as to who she is, but there’s nothing explaining her powers or how or why she got them and what her mission is. A recap anywhere in the book would’ve been very helpful.

I wish I could say that at least the art was good, but the book falls a little short in that department too. Artist Andre Araujo is kind of all over the place with his art. I think that, in time, he’ll be a very competent artist, but right now, it’s pretty hit or miss. I don’t know if it was the way the script was written or just the way he drew the book, but there’s some very awkward art transitions that leave you scratching your head.

I really wish I could give this book a better recommendation, but honestly, I just can’t. If you’re putting out a brand new number 1 issue, there really should be some kind of introduction of the character or recap of previous series. Unfortunately, this book suffers very badly from the lack of both.
