New Poster and Images from ‘John Carter’ Released

Following the debut this week of the latest trailer for Disney’s much-anticipated space opera John Carter the studio has released a new batch of stills from the film as well as the new poster, which you can check out here below.

Some of these images are recognizable from the trailer. We get better looks at the alien life of Barsoom, such as the ferocious white apes Carter has to battle in a crucial sequence. But if these stills are any indication of the final production, Taylor Kitsch will spend the majority of the film with his mouth hanging open like he just had some teeth pulled and he’s trying to catch flies for dinner.

Then there’s that new poster. I don’t know, but there’s really something very off about it. The title font is boring, and although the artwork is awash in glorious red and orange, the actual red planet of John Carter bears more of a resemblance to Monument Valley. Meanwhile, the Carter character is front and center at the bottom half of the poster, but is left looking like he’s working the catwalks of Milan instead of exploring the mysterious and dangerous world of Barsoom. It’s a dull image lacking any dynamism, a complete hack job given the reported $250 million (maybe more) budget of the film.

I used to think Disney was just confused about how to market John Carter; now I can’t help but wonder if the studio has completely lost their faith in the project.

John Carter opens on March 9, 2012.
