‘Watchmen’ Writer Alan Moore Set To Occupy Comics After Spat With Frank Miller
  |  @   |

A bit of a conflict has developed between highly regarded comic book creators Alan Moore (Watchmen, V For Vendetta) and Frank Miller (Sin City, 300). Instead of having opposing perspectives on something comic book related, however, the two are fired up over something a little more political in nature: the Occupy Wall Street movement.

It began back in November, when Miller had what could be considered to be some rather blunt words for the many protesters who are currently occupying Wall Street in hopes of standing up against corporate greed and corruption, and making it more visible to the unaware. Miller’s comments were then responded to a couple of days ago by Moore, who, as you might have assumed, is on the polar opposite side of Miller’s opinions…and also his work in general.

Check out both Miller and Moore’s comments, see why Moore is now joining something called Occupy Comics, and check out a video for it below.

Of the Occupy Wall Street movement, here is a fragment of what Miller had to say on his website:

Occupy is nothing but a pack of louts, thieves, and rapists, an unruly mob, fed by Woodstock-era nostalgia and putrid false righteousness. These clowns can do nothing but harm America.

This is no popular uprising. This is garbage. And goodness knows they’re spewing their garbage – both politically and physically – every which way they can find. [These are] a bunch of iPhone, iPad wielding spoiled brats who should stop getting in the way of working people and find jobs for themselves.

In the name of decency, go home to your parents, you losers. Go back to your mommas’ basements and play with your Lords Of Warcraft, or better yet, enlist for the real thing. Maybe our military could whip some of you into shape.

You can read Miller’s full statement by heading here.

Obviously those words aren’t going to lead Miller to any popularity contest championships, but Moore took it a step further witch criticism of Miller’s works.

Moore said:

Frank Miller is someone whose work I’ve barely looked at for the past twenty years. I thought the Sin City stuff was unreconstructed misogyny, 300 appeared to be wildly ahistoric, homophobic and just completely misguided.

It’s about what I’d expect from him”¦ I think it would be fair to say that me and Frank Miller have diametrically opposing views upon all sorts of things, but certainly upon the Occupy movement.

As far as I can see, the Occupy movement is just ordinary people reclaiming rights which should always have been theirs. I can’t think of any reason why as a population we should be expected to stand by and see a gross reduction in the living standards of ourselves and our kids, possibly for generations, when the people who have got us into this have been rewarded for it.

It’s a completely justified howl of moral outrage and it seems to be handled in a very intelligent, non-violent way, which is probably another reason why Frank Miller would be less than pleased with it. I’m sure if it had been a bunch of young, sociopathic vigilantes with Batman make-up on their faces, he’d be more in favor of it. We would definitely have to agree to differ on that one.

Now Moore has cemented his spot opposite of Miller’s views by joining the Occupy Comics movement, and who better to be a part of something like this than the man who wrote V For Vendetta?

The movement brings together multiple comic book writers and artists to create new comics inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement, with proceeds going right back into the protests.

Below is a video about Occupy Comics from its Kickstarter page.

What do you think of the feud between Miller and Moore, as well as the Occupy Comics movement?

  2. Alan Moore is 100% correct as always. Frank Miller may be the most over-rated comic book writer in history. His rant about “Occupy” was a joke. I am not totally in favor of how “Occupy” is going about it but Miller sounded like an uninformed conservative radio host.

  3. While Frank Miller’s belligerent rant was bordering on childish… at least I could understand what he said. Thanks for proving that it could have been worse.

  4. Paul, how well do you personally know Alan Moore?  Based on your comments I am going to place you in the ‘I believe everything Fox News spout’ group.

  6. I’d say the human race has a couple of hundred years left on this planet at best, which is probably a good thing in the grand scheme of things. Frank Miller has always been overrated, and since hearing his comments on this ‘Occupy..’ issue, it has cemented my opinion that he is a fool. Anyone who advocates joining the Army, sorry, hired killers, has to have a screw loose. What’s wrong with a bit of socialism (that’s rhetorical).

  7. With everything I’ve seen and read about Frank Miller and Alan Moore, I can say without a doubt that Frank is saner than Alan. Alan Moore is missing more than a few screws.

  8. have to disagree with you there, alan has made a constructed point about the people of the occupied movement..in contrast to frank calling them (rapists)…cause rapists hate the corruption of banks and the greed they cause…and how much rapists hate a bought congress
