Could Netflix Be The Savior ‘Firefly’ Fans Have Been Waiting For?

Firefly

Before you get too excited, no, Netflix is not thinking about bringing Firefly back from the dead…not yet, at least. This is strictly speculative, but it also makes a hell of a lot of sense when you think about it. And fans will indeed think about it.

Comic book (Push, The Highwaymen) and TV (Alphas) writer Marc Bernardin made the case on his Tumblr page, Phenomenaut Aerospace, that none other than Netflix should step up and become the savior that Firefly fans have been desperately waiting for. The reasoning is not without base, either.

Netlfix recently made news when it was announced that they would be bringing back a show that passionate fans have been fighting to see brought back to life for years now: Arrested Development. The company is also developing some new original series to take them far past just being a rental service, so why not find a way to bring back yet another show the masses have been screaming to get back for years now?

Whether Netflix will ever hear about this and even ponder it remains to be seen—Fox does still own the rights and might just be ignoring all offers—but others have taken notice…others who make this a story worth note. Yes, of course, I’m talking about a one Mr. Nathan Fillion, one of the stars of the show and one who many might consider the heart and soul of the show. He read Bernardin’s post and, on his Twitter account, appeared to enjoy what he read, saying only “Hmm. Hmmmmm. HMMMMMM.”

It would take people like Fillion and others involved with the show getting to Netflix and truly planting the seeds, but this is where the whispers begin. Shout it loud, and shout it in Netflix’s general direction. You never know what might come out of it.

It’s no secret that Netflix has not been a popular name over the past year or so after they announced some big price increases. They’ve been trying to recover their losses since then and, personally, I can’t think of many better ways of doing so than resurrecting a show geeks everywhere have been fighting for since Fox prematurely canceled it oh so long ago. Not only would the move make me happy, but Netflix would jump from villain to superhero in my eyes.

What would you think about Netflix stepping up and finding a way to bring Firefly back to life somehow?

  1. Firefly is dead.  It wouldn’t be the same if they brought it back, so I’m kinda hoping it stays dead.  Another show in the same universe or  a reboot with a new cast would be fine.

  2. The real question is, “Why hasn’t Netflix picked up Firefly?”

  4.  Well, you’re in luck, then, Will, cause Whedon already said if he ever got the rights back, he wouldn’t feature the same character anyway. Yes, I do love the characters of Firefly, but what made it really unique -was- the universe. I’d be almost as happy to see a new show set in the same universe, assuming Whedon still had his hands in it. And if Netflix did that… I would actually give them money, instead of just torrenting it. :p
