Production Begins On J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Trek’ Sequel

Paramount Pictures announced that production began on Saturday on J.J. Abrams‘ next Star Trek film.

The follow-up to 2009’s Star Trek, a reboot of the original franchise, will be released in 3D in theaters on May 17, 2013. Composer Michael Giacchino is back scoring for the new movie, while actors John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Anton Yelchin will all be reprising their roles aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.

As previously reported, Alice Eve, Peter Weller, Noel Clarke, and Benedict Cumberbatch have been cast in Star Trek 2, with Cumberbatch as the villain, a role Benicio Del Toro was originally set to play.

While the sequel is informally being referred to as Star Trek 2, the final title hasn’t been decided on yet. I don’t know about you, but as long as it’s not Star Trek 2: The Quickening, I think we’re good.

The 2009 movie was my favorite film of that year, and I’m one of those crazy Trek fans, so this sequel can’t get here fast enough for me. The only thing I’m not crazy about is that it will be in 3D, a format I really dislike. Even if I get to see the movie in 2D, there will still be those annoying in-your-face moments that wouldn’t be there if not for the 3D aspect. So, I expect plenty of debris flying at me and a hatchet or a harpoon or maybe even a paddle ball.

  1. Star Trek 2: Electric Boogaloo always has a nice ring to it.
