Universal Pictures has released a new image and international poster for their upcoming summer tentpole sci-fi action board game adaptation Battleship.

Both the poster and image feature the same theme: humanity overwhelmed by massive alien technology. The studio is hoping the multiple Transformers connections and similarities will help make Battleship a huge hit. It couldn’t hurt. At least they’re not springing for a last-minute, headache-inducing 3D conversion to boost their fortunes. Then again, the premiere isn’t for a few months so there’s still time.

Battleship is directed by Peter Berg from a screenplay by Erich Hoeber and Jon Hoeber, and stars Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker, and Rihanna. The movie opens on May 18, 2012.
