IDW continues adapting the classic Star Trek television episodes into comic book form starring the cast of the 2009 Star Trek reboot movie. Star Trek #5 is based on the classic Star Trek television episode, “Operation: Annihilate” written by Oliver Crawford and Steve W. Carabatsos.

Writer Mike Johnson takes a GREAT many liberties with the story that this issue is based on, and so far, it’s working out great. After all, it would be pretty boring if the story was beat for beat the same as the television episode and just drawn in with the actors that played the characters in the 2009 film.

First off, I sat down to watch a little bit of the episode that this was based on, and I quickly discovered that this issue only covers about 10 minutes of that episode. I’m anxious to see what the next issue will bring, because if Johnson’s moving at this pace, this story could be spread out over at least 5 to 6 issues. What I didn’t like about this issue is that the characters themselves weren’t different enough from the classic ones. While it’s hard to portray the differences an actor will put across on the screen into comics, I wish Johnson would’ve taken a few more liberties.

Joe Corroney is a good artist, but I wish he would’ve been a little looser with the designs on the alien planets. Granted, it’s a 100 percent improvement over the office buildings in the original series, but again, like the writing, I was expecting a little bit more. Corroney is fantastic at drawing likenesses without them looking strange or like they were drawn from photo references. And the detail that he puts into a page is amazing.

All in all, a really good issue. It could have been great, but I’m sure that both creators’ hands are tied, to an extent, by the fact that it’s a licensed comic. I’m looking forward to the next issue, and you will be too.
