Listen To Three Tracks From Michael Giacchino’s ‘John Carter’ Music Score

In December composer Michael Giacchino was a guest on “Movies on the Radio,” a popular program spotlighting film composers that airs on the New York-based classical radio station WQXR. Best known for providing the scores to movies such as The Incredibles, Star Trek, and the last two Mission: Impossible sequels, Giacchino gave listeners of the show a special treat by previewing three tracks from his score to Disney’s upcoming mega-budget intergalactic adventure John Carter.

You can listen to all three tracks here below.

Although this is the first time Giacchino has scored a film directed by Andrew Stanton, the two have worked together in the past on several Pixar productions, including Ratatouille and Up. An adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs‘ classic 1912 novel A Princess of Mars, John Carter is animation veteran Stanton’s first foray into live-action filmmaking. The film also marks the return of Giacchino to scoring a big studio science-fiction film since the 2009 J.J. Abrams-directed reboot of Star Trek.

Although the early trailers and posters for John Carter have not aroused much interest in me to want to see it, listening to Giacchino’s terrific score has made almost a believer in the film’s potential to capture the spirit of adventure the previews sorely lack. The music presented here has a wonderfully vintage epic sweep packed with soaring emotion and tension. I think this was the missing piece of the puzzle. I’m sold now; John Carter could be one of the best of this year’s blockbusters.

John Carter opens on March 9, 2012. You can pre-order the soundtrack here.

  2. Sounds like a real epic, swashbuckling score!  Eagerly anticipating the movie, but first I gotta re-read A Princess of Mars.
