A ‘Back to the Future’ Musical Possibly Coming To Broadway?
  |

When a classic film franchise’s prospects of returning to the big screen have forever dried up, its creators look for any remaining possibility of milking every last cent from the property’s dormant viability. So it doesn’t surprise me in the least that the 1985 sci-fi comedy blockbuster Back to the Future might be the latest beloved film of my youth to be resurrected as a Broadway musical.

It’s not a done deal, but Deadline is reporting that original director Robert Zemeckis is currently in talks with Bob Gale, who co-wrote the original Back to the Future and its two sequels as well as produced each film, and franchise composer (and Zemeckis’ composer of choice) Alan Silvestri about putting together an all-singing, all-dancing stage adaptation of the original feature which made a movie star out of Michael J. Fox. After the third and final Back to the Future movie was released in 1990, the series lived on as a short-lived Saturday morning cartoon and as a popular theme park attraction at Universal Studios Florida and Universal Studios Hollywood.

The Back to the Future trilogy grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide. If the musical adaptation becomes a reality Zemeckis’ production company ImageMovers will be involved.
