Update: Harrison Ford Not Aboard ‘Blade Runner’ Reboot?
  |

Hold on to your horses guys, don’t count your eggs before they hatch, apparently.

Over the weekend, rumors arose connecting none other than Harrison Ford to the upcoming remake/reboot of his classic Ridley Scott film, Blade Runner. Scott is once again directing this film, so while the rumor seemed valid, one couldn’t help but think that the volatile relationship between the two would keep this from actually happening. And now, that appears to actually be the case.

Deadline reports that Alcon Entertainment has debunked the rumor, one that literally lit the internet ablaze during Super Bowl weekend, basically stating that “there has been no discussion about it.”

“It is absolutely patently false that there has been any discussion about Harrison Ford being in Blade Runner,” [Andrew] Kosove [of Alcon Enterntainment] told [Mike Fleming of Deadline]. “To be clear, what we are trying to do with Ridley now is go through the painstaking process of trying to break the back of the story, figure out the direction we’re going to take the movie and find a writer to work on it. The casting of the movie could not be further from our minds at this moment.”

Personally, while this isn’t all that shocking, it’s quite good in my humble opinion. I adore the original film, and while I think the universe could be mined for something interesting, the idea of seeing Ford back in it would be something far less intriguing. I know it’s an odd stance, but for some reason, the less connected this film seems towards the original, the better.

But, when Kosove was asked straight out if Ford could return, he responded: “In advance of knowing what we’re going to do, I supposed you could say yes, he could. But I think it is quite unlikely.”

Essentially, Kosove is saying that they haven’t even gotten to the point of casting at this time, therefore aren’t any “early talks” happening with Ford for his return to the franchise. And since they haven’t even gotten up to the script part of the process, let alone casting, Kosove can’t say 100 percent that Ford won’t be in the film, but he does stress that it’s unlikely.

What do you think?

  1. Despite a recently rocky career, I still have a great amount of respect for Harrison Ford. That being said, I don’t see why he necessarily needs to be attached to a new Blade Runner. Mix the District 9 team with the guys doing the new Judge Dredd and we might have something that equals what Syd Mead and Ridley Scott did back in 82…
