Reading Flash Gordon: Zeitgeist #3, I’m reminded why I love the character so much. It’s the ultimate fish out of water story, except the fish knows how to fight and has a sword and ray gun.

Since both Eric Trautmann amd Alex Ross are credited with the story, I guess I have to praise them both for coming up with, really, what this book is supposed to be. Remember movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark or Back to the Future 2, when there was a cliffhanger almost every two minutes? Imagine that kind of story, in comic form, and that’s what you have here. Absolutely edge of your seat reading. New characters are introduced, there’s danger everywhere. THIS is why the phrase “page-turner” was coined.

This issue’s artists, Daniel Indro and Ron Adrian, put together some pretty awesome pages. One of the most impressive things about the art is that everything looks consistent. I can’t imagine how difficult it is to make all that technology and scenery look like it’s from another planet and at the same time make it look like it BELONGS on that other planet. The scenes on Earth look like they should, and again, the scenes that take place on Mongo look appropriately alien.

This comic is only three months old, and there’s been so much story so far, I feel like I’ve been reading it for a year. That’s quite something in today’s comic market where it usually takes a book six issues just for the hero to get a costume. What Flash Gordon: Zeitgeist is, is good, old fashioned fun, with a modern twist. Don’t just settle for comics that roll along and give you the same thing month after month, grab this book and enjoy a story that is fast-paced, beautifully drawn, and a hell of a good time!
