‘Valley Girl’ Getting Remade By MGM and Clay Weiner

Apparently people are just Nicolas Cage crazy.
Here’s the story. Deadline is reporting that MGM is, in their imminent wisdom (read: odd insanity) set to remake the 1983 musical, Valley Girl, which was one of the launching pad for the now beloved and often maligned thespian. The studio has tapped Clay Weiner to direct. Wait, who?
Best known as a commercial director, Weiner’s only feature credit is the film Fred: The Movie, which is quite possibly the worst feature film ever made, or all least the most eye-gougingly annoying film ever put to celluloid.
Personally, while I do find it odd that this film is being remade, the thing that gets me a bit worried is that Weiner just doesn’t seem like the right director for the job. The film is being rewritten by Jenny Lumet, writer of Rachel Getting Married and daughter of the late Sidney Lumet, so there is definitely potential here, it just seems like a really odd choice.
Hopefully they either keep the New Wave soundtrack which was kind of killer, or avoid the mall punk/emo tunes or oddly popular dubstep tracks that plague pop radio these days. Fingers crossed.
