Wonder Woman Documentary Showcasing At SXSW
  |

A new documentary entitled Wonder Woman: The Untold Story of American Superheroines, which focuses on the growth and development of superheroines through comics, war, feminism, and the Riot Grrl movement of more recent years, will be showcased at the South By Southwest (SXSW) film festival.

While the documentary spends time on Wonder Woman, from the trailer which you can watch here below, it appears that the documentary is truly about feminism and how gender roles are displayed in popular culture depending on society’s attitude towards women at the time. The documentary is being directed by Kristy Guevara-Flanagan (Going on 13) and features appearances by Lynda Carter (Wonder Woman), Lindsay Wagner (The Bionic Woman), Kathleen Hana from punk band Bikini Kill, Gloria Steinem, Trina Robbins, and more to discuss the impact of pop culture’s portrayal of women in media.

I personally think that there needs to be more documentaries like this as I can only struggle to think of a great official Wonder Woman documentary produced by Warner Bros./DC Entertainment. But not only is there a need for a Wonder Woman documentary specifically, there’s a need for comic book documentaries like this, in general. One that truly looks at comic book characters’ impact on society and society’s impact on comic book characters. It’s truly fascinating and I can’t wait to actually see this.

It’s scheduled for the documentary spotlight of SXSW, but for more information on the project go to the official site for updates and hit up their Kickstarter. The project has, obviously, already been funded, but it looks like they’ll be trying to raise a little bit more, possibly for production costs and wide availability. Anyway, it’s a fascinating project and I can’t wait to see more from it.
