Ever since it played the South by Southwest festival early last year there has been a tremendous amount of buzz surrounding the movie Detention. Despite being picked up for distribution by Sony Pictures back in June the film has not even come close to getting a domestic release. Now Sony has announced that Detention will finally be released in theaters this April through Samuel Goldwyn Films and the studio has released a first clip from the movie.

On the surface Detention appears to be a post-modern goof on the teen slasher movie genre in the tradition of the Scream movies, but from the reviews of the film that were posted shortly after its SXSW premiere there’s a lot more going on than any traditional plot synopsis written by a person with moderate mental stability can contain. I wouldn’t consider myself one of those individuals but I still don’t want to repeat what I’ve read about Detention. I….just….can’t.

I can tell you that the movie is directed by Joseph Kahn, the prolific music video director who made his feature debut with the 2004 guilty pleasure action flick Torque, from a screenplay he co-wrote with Mark Palermo. Starring in Detention are Josh Hutcherson (also in The Hunger Games, which opens next month – I wonder if the decision by Sony to open Detention not long after is a calculated move by the studio to piggyback on the presumed success of Lionsgate’s much-anticipated movie) and stand-up comic and Internet whipping boy Dane Cook, along with a supporting cast of little-knowns and unknowns.

This could be either your new favorite movie or one that you will hate on for years to come. There will be no middle ground as far as this film is concerned.

Detention will begin blowing minds and dropping jaws on Friday April 13, 2012.
