Watch This 10-Minute Clip From The Beginning Of ‘John Carter’

Walt Disney Pictures really, really wants you to see John Carter, the movie they’ve been marketing rather poorly up until recently. In fact, the studio is so desperate to gets butts in seats for this big flick that they’re making a 10-minute clip from the movie’s opening available online absolutely FREE!

You can watch the video here below.

All I can say after watching this clip is, “Hot damn.” There is infinitely more humor, adventure, and tension in this clip than in the entirety of recent sci-fi tentpole releases like Cowboys & Aliens and Tron: Legacy.

Taylor Kitsch‘s performance in the title role is carefully growing on me now. I really do get what he’s doing here. Plus, it’s fun to see Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) and Don Stark (That 70’s Show) popping up in small but memorable character turns. Michael Giacchino‘s score reminded me of David Arnold’s swashbuckling compositions for Stargate and Independence Day, which is far from being a bad thing because no matter how you may feel about the movies, his scores always kick ass.

Since Disney’s lackluster promotional campaign for John Carter began late last summer my expectations for the movie were lukewarm at best. I only recently started reading the original Edgar Rice Burroughs pulp novels on which the movie is based, but the imagery and sense of wonder and adventure the author’s prose generated in my mind was far from matching what director Andrew Stanton, practically given a blank check from the Mouse House, had brought to the screen.

But I’m a realist and heartily accept the fact that this is Stanton’s film and his vision, and all I’m concerned with is that the director and his creative team and cast preserve the fundamentals of the John Carter of Mars pulp novel series that began a century ago and has since given rise to generations of fantastic film, literature, and television. If this clip is any indication, Stanton has done a much greater job than expected. I’m sold. Bring this movie on already!

John Carter opens this Friday, March 9, 2012.

  1. Wow, I wasn’t expecting it to be quite so humorous! Is that… Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad as Powell? Oh, wait IMDB… yup!

It’s an interesting way to market the film, but out of context I wasn’t sure at first (they’re basically intimating that author Edgar Rice Burroughs didn’t have an original idea when he came up with a Princess of Mars). I think I’m willing to give the film a fair shake, though. I miss old fashioned adventure stories and although Taylor Kitsch does a little bit too much “Christian Bale as Batman” voice for my tastes, he’s an interesting new face to see in this kind of role. I think the role could have benefited from some more subtle acting, but this is Pulp SF we’re talking about here…
