‘Chronicle’ Director Josh Trank In Talks For ‘Spider-Man’ Spinoff ‘Venom’
  |  @   |

We’ve been hearing about a possible spinoff movie based on the Spider-Man villain Venom for a long, long while now, and now the project looks to have a brand new director in line to make it a reality.

It’s being reported that Josh Trank, the director behind the low-budget found footage hit, Chronicle, has entered into negotiations to direct Venom for Sony Pictures, who are preparing to release their reboot of the Spider-Man franchise with The Amazing Spider-Man.

Last we had heard of Venom—not counting the occasional rumor—was a couple years back when it we found out that The Hunger Games director and one-time Spider-Man 4 writer Gary Ross was being brought in to pen a draft of the script with the possibility of also directing. This was back when Sam Raimi was still getting ready to direct Spidey 4, if that tells you anything.

Now Sony is looking for a new writer to craft a script for Trank to direct from, and the only thing left to wonder is whether this is going to be a Venom movie that ends up looking more like Spider-Man 3, where Topher Grace played the baddie, or if the dark and brutal approach required to make fans happy will be of paramount importance.

Trank was also said to be a top pick to direct the Fantastic Four reboot at one point, though that’s not confirmed at the moment. If the 27-year-old director does reach a deal for Venom, it’s pretty unlikely that he’ll be captaining both Marvel properties.

What do you think of Trank as a director for Venom?
