I’ve been a Cassie Hack fan for quite some time, but Hack/Slash #13 is the first time I have had the chance to review the comic. I have long been impressed with Tim Seeley‘s writing and the way he manages to make every comic fun from start to finish. This issue was no exception, I thoroughly enjoyed the story (though I wish there was more Vlad in this one).

Kicking off a comic with velociraptors is an awesome way to begin a story. Closer interaction with them, however, changes more than one character’s opinion of them. I even enjoyed the Jurassic Park movie reference. I mean, really…who doesn’t love raptors?

This month we get a lot of personal interaction and minimal action, an unusual thing for this series. But speaking of action, Cassie deals with one former slasher in a totally interesting (and non-deadly) way. But things are not what they seem, though you’ll get no spoilers from me!

I mentioned that I always love the stories and plots, which I stand by completely. But what I seldom think about in this series is the art. Emilio Laiso and Carlos Badilla give this comic a slightly silver age feel with the way colors and drawings are put to paper. It’s almost retro, though a bit more detailed. The combination of art and writing brings the reader a consistently entertaining comic book series, which is obviously the goal, of course.

This is part two of a run, so it’s difficult to recommend this as a purchase to the uninitiated. That said, go buy this issue and the previous one and you can easily be made to feel at home. For the cost of a coney from a street vendor, fans can pick up this newest issue. Plus, the comic will give you no aching stomach the next day. My vote is go for it. This is a great series. Buy it, read it, love it.
