Vertigo Gets Own Digital App; Kicks Things Off With 99 Cent Sale Of Neil Gaiman’s ‘Sandman’
  |

Vertigo Comics announced Wednesday that they’d be kicking off their brand new digital comics app with a 99 cent sale on all Sandman comics.

So, there’s two things going on here: DC Comics has split their Vertigo Comics imprint from the main DC Comics app to give all of the Vertigo titles a digital home. That’s right! New comics like Fairest, Saucer County, Domique Laveau: Voodoo Child and The New Deadwardians will all be going day and date digital, while established books like The Invisibles, American Vampire, The Unwritten, Fables and many, many more will also be making their way to the Vertigo-only app. Which is pretty cool.

Vertigo has nice selection of creator-owned and Vertigo-exclusive titles that don’t tie in to the DC Universe, and a lot of readers only care for content that’s more along the lines of Vertigo’s books, so it makes some sense. It is, however, counter-intuitive to bringing in Vertigo readers into the DC Universe and show them comics in the DCU that they may actually like and want to purchase. For example, if you like The Invisibles, why not check out Grant Morrison’s Batman run? I mean, that makes sense to me, you know? I did some research, and they’ve actually removed the Vertigo comics with the exception of a handful of single comics from the DC app. Why they’ve done that? Well, I don’t know, but you can still find them in the Comixology app.

However, many comic readers who adore the mid-’80s to mid-’90s comic book work from Vertigo don’t really mesh with many super hero comics, and that’s fine. Many metal heads, goth kids, and the like adored Vertigo titles from writers like Grant Morrison, Peter Milligan, and most certainly Neil Gaiman’s epically beautiful Sandman work.

And speaking of Gaiman’s Sandman, there’s a really nice sale going on right now in the Vertigo Comics app that’s available on both iOS devices and the Android marketplace that sees all issues of Sandman from Neil Gaiman for a low, low price of 99 cents. Now, there are plenty of new readers and more established readers who are intimidated by the length and price that have never actually read the entirety of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, so this is a sale for us. If you’ve ever wanted to read Sandman, now’s the time. There’s more potential participants in the sale, though. People love this series so much that they will buy it in four different formats and not part with any of the copies. They may have bought the single issues when they originally came out, then they may have purchased the paperbacks for easy reading, then they may have purchased the absolute editions or received them as gifts so that they could appreciate the art of many talented artists like Sam Keith and Jill Thompson, and now they may be technology geeks who simply must have this material on their tablet devices because they exclusively read digital comics now to cut down on clutter.

Now, you may think that’s oddly specific, and it is. But it’s also a perfect example of how much people love and are dedicated to Sandman. Seriously, it’s a phenomenon. People love this comic. So, if that’s not reason enough for you to participate in this sale if you haven’t read the comic before, I don’t what will make you want to. Free candy? I don’t think it comes with that, but seriously 99 cents per issue of a series that is universally heralded as one of the greatest comic book runs of all time. Sounds like a winner to me.

The Sandman 99 cent sale won’t last forever as it winds down end of day Friday, so make sure you get a hold of that Vertigo app as soon as you can, because that’s the only place you’ll find the deal.
