Korean Film ‘The Man From Nowhere’ To Get American Remake
  |  @   |

Remaking foreign films for the American market is no new dance, and it continues with the announcement by Dimension Films that they will be remaking the South Korean hit The Man From Nowhere.

The movie tells the story of a quiet, reclusive pawn shop owner with a dark, painful past. He keeps mostly to himself until one day a young girl with whom he has formed a bond is kidnapped by a gang involved with drug dealing and organ harvesting, forcing him to dig deep into his dark past to rescue her.

Korea’s highest-grossing film of 2010, the movie was one of two Korean films I saw in the past year or so. The other being the country’s 2011 highest-grossing film, The War of the Arrows.

Enjoying both very much, these two movies helped to secure me as a fan of Korean filmmaking. The only other two I’ve seen are Oldboy, which of course is the far and away favorite and best-known title to emerge from there, and The Host. From now, however, on I shall keep a much closer eye on their works.

As for whether an American remake will be good or not all depends on who ends up making it. It certainly has potential, but if you have Netflix at your disposal the original is available for instant streaming right now, and I very much recommend checking it out instead of waiting.
