One thing you can always expect from Aspen Comics is that they will be visually appealing. Charismagic #5 is no exception that rule, not on any level. I have never read nor reviewed any other issues in this series, but it definitely looks like an Aspen book and one that would have pleased the founder, Michael Turner (R.I.P.).

In the sky above Costa Rica, we find Samsun doing battle with a phoenix (one of the Guardians of the wizard Kon). We quickly move to see Hank, our hero, being directed by Sudana to focus his magical powers. After a small, but meaningful, mistake he finds that his abilities are far beyond anything he had ever imagined. Sparkles and the Guardians make their way towards the Temple, meeting up with Hank and Sudana on the way.

Once there, however, they find themselves set upon by evil spellcasters, most likely the same witches who banished Kon. A massive battle begins, with both sides suffering wounds or casualties. Just when you think you know what’s going on, the issue makes sure you go nowhere, as this is where they drop the “to be continued” emblem.

I’ll admit, I was a bit lost at the beginning, but Vince Hernandez made it pretty easy to catch up on the major story. His writing style is quick and efficient, leaving the reader knowledgeable and satisfied with the tale. Add to that the gorgeous art by Khary Randolph and you get one beautiful comic series. Emilio Lopez’s perfect blending of colors also stands out in several panels. As I said before, Aspen is known for their art.

An interesting comic, this one seems to blur the lines between the magical realms and the known world. The concept is not new, by any means, but it is done far better than many. I find myself liking the series and wanting to grab the early issues to get a full view of the plot and characters. I want to know more about the wizard and his powers and I really want to know how it all turns out. Therefore, I do believe this will be an addition to my monthly reads. You should check it out, too.
