Wait, What?! Syfy NOT Moving Forward With ‘Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome’

Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome

This is one of those surreal moments in life, the likes of which no geek wants to experience.

While writing up a short piece for the the awesome first trailer for Syfy’s Battlestar Galactica prequel, Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, I went to find out when this exciting new series was going to finally premiere. The answer I found was: never. It’s being reported that Syfy has decided NOT to move forward with the show after years of development.

As it turns out, the “trailer” was just a demo reel set to Trent Reznor and Karen O’s “Immigrant Song” cover from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo that was shown at WonderCon. Syfy apparently thought it over for a long time, but ultimately decided it was not in their best interest (who cares what the fans want, right?) to continue forward with the property as a series. This might not, however, mean that we’ll never see Blood & Chrome.

You can read why there’s still some hope to see this and check out the fast-paced first “trailer” by clicking on over to the other side now.

When it was first conceived, BSG: Blood & Chrome was planned as a web series. It would appear that Syfy will now instead “actively pursue” it as just that: a digital series. The 90-minute pilot episode will eventually air on Syfy, so even though the series as a whole won’t premiere we should still at least get to see one episode on TV.

Syfy’s president of original programming, Mark Stern, had this to say:

“Though the vision for ‘Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome’ has evolved over the course of the past year, our enthusiasm for this ambitious project has not waned.

We are actively pursuing it as was originally intended: a groundbreaking digital series that will launch to audiences beyond the scope of a television screen. The 90-minute pilot movie will air on Syfy in its entirety at a future date.”

The show follows everyone’s favorite eventual Battlestar admiral, William Adama (played by Edward James Olmos in the Ron Moore and David Eick series), back when he was just a hotshot fighter pilot in the 10th year of the first Cylon War. The young Adama in Blood & Chrome is played by Luke Pasqualino.

There’s been an empty space in many of our hearts since Battlestar Galactica ended. The first prequel series, Caprica, wasn’t nearly as good, but it was still pretty darn good…up until Syfy canceled it after one season. BSG fans were now looking to Blood & Chrome as the next chance for us to get back into that world we love so much, and now the only way we’ll be able to do that is in an online web series? Something tells me this won’t go over well.

And the ironic thing? While first writing about this trailer, knowing Syfy’s reputation, I couldn’t help but wonder if we would even get a full season of the new show before it was canceled. This is the company who canceled Caprica. The company that canceled Stargate SG1. The company who cares more about reality shows, horrible movies, and WRESTLING than actual science fiction shows. And you wonder why they decided to change their name from SciFi to the still-goofy Syfy.

I’m sure many of you will join me in saying, Syfy, you are now dead to us.

Speak your mind, ladies and gentlemen. What do you think of Syfy’s new gameplan to tell us about exciting new sci-fi shows and cancel them before they even start?

  2. Seriously, when I saw there WAS a trailer, I *didn’t* want to watch it because I *knew* I would just get my heart broken if I did.

  3. With more people cutting the cable, this may be a case of forward thinking.

  4. And the Trailer is now dead b/c copywright claim by NBC.

  5. Frak SyFy in the ASS!!!!  It’s become the MTV of genre programming, a complete betrayal of what it started as being.  The name change from “SciFi” to “SyFy” fruther signifies that have no interest in representing science fiction in any positive light; they’re just interested in pandering to the lowest common denominator with their wrestling, reality TV and horrible Z-grade movies.

  6. To be fair, horrible z-grade movies have been a Sci-Fi staple since before the name change (although they do seem to have gotten worse).

  9. Of all the properties to turn down–they are turning one down with an established fan base? What are they developing instead–another Superalien TRex vs Dinogator? We need a new SF Channel–two actually. One with retro sci-fi for those that really dig the good old stuff, and another developing new shows by people like us, people like Geeks of Doom!!

  10. I agree that SyFy’s stuff nowadays largely reeks. But the reason they’re doing this is because they don’t believe there’s that much of a fan base left. Look at BSG’s ratings the last two years, then Caprica’s. Start toting up the costs of Blood & Chrome and it’s not the “no brainer” to green light it that the remaining fans think.

But yes, in the spirit of the article, SyFy, you are now dead to me (and have been for a while).
