Comedian and late-night talk show host Conan O’Brien announced today, April 1, 2012, that he has purchased the tech news site Mashable for a whopping 3,500 Smackeroos and has ousted its CEO and founder Pete Cashmore.
O’Brien announced the news through a video on Mashable’s YouTube video page; you can watch that video here in full below.
Of his reasoning behind wanting to take over Mashable, O’Brien said the following:
I’m sick and tired of scanning the Internet looking for any news about technology: Devices, gadgets, what’s coming up, maybe even a rating system for gadgets that are out there. It doesn’t exist on the web and it’s high time it did.
O’Brien then called Cashmore at home and proceeded to continuously order him to “get out!, which caused some slight confusion. Once Cashmore realized that O’Brien was telling him to vacate his position at Mashable, the CEO said O’Brien would have to buy him out first. That’s when the crazed comedian said he’d pay 3,500 Smackeroos, which caused more confusion.
O’Brien ended the video by saying to expect lots of tweets from him, as he attempted to use his landline phone to send a message to Twitter. He did eventually update his Twitter account to send the news out that “mashable is out of touch.”
