Photo: President Obama and Uhura Give The Vulcan Salute In The Oval Office
  |  @   |

Actress Nichelle Nichols, who played Lt. Uhura in the original 1960s Star Trek television series, recently had the chance to visit the White House, where she had her photo taken with President Barack Obama in the Oval Office.

And what are the two of them doing in the photo? Flashing the Vulcan salute.

Awesome.

Check out the photo here below.

Nichols met with Obama on February 29, 2012, and posted the photo to her Twitter account today. “A photo came to me in the mail that I’ve kept for myself for over a week, but now it’s time to share it with Trekkers everywhere,” the 79-year-old actress tweeted. “Taken 2/29/12 in the Oval Office – Live Long & Prosper!”

It’s a well-known fact that the President is a big fan of Star Trek, so he’s serious with that Vulcan salute (and he’s flashed it many times before).

Nichols, whose Lt. Uhura was the communications officer serving under the command of Captain Kirk on the starship U.S.S. Enterprise, is known for playing one of the first African-American female characters on television who wasn’t in a servant-type role. In her 1994 autobiography, Beyond Uhura: Star Trek and Other Memories, Nichols explains how she was thinking of leaving the series, but decided to stay after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who was a fan of the show, stressed to her that she was now a role model for young black women and that her role had opened a door for African-Americans, showing them as equals. Uhura’s kiss with William Shatner’s Captain Kirk in the 1968 Star Trek episode “Plato’s Stepchildren” was the first interracial kiss shown on U.S. television.

The actress appeared in all three seasons of the television series, as well as voiced Uhura in the subsequent Star Trek: The Animated Series. She then went on to star with the other original cast members, including William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, in six Star Trek movies.
