Robert Rodriguez Says Frank Frazetta Movie ‘Fire and Ice’ Next After ‘Machete Kills,’ ‘Sin City 2’

Robert Rodriguez is feeling pretty productive lately—and it’s a good thing, too, because multiple projects that he’s been developing for a while now and/or waiting for all who are involved in said projects’ schedules to open up are finally ready to get moving.

It begins with Machete Kills, the sequel to 2010’s Machete that sees Danny Trejo returning as the vengeful ex-Federale (and possibly joined by Mel Gibson), followed by Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, the long-awaited follow-up to 2005’s Sin City—both of which Rodriguez announced recently would film this summer.

Now Rodriguez has also confirmed that after those two movies are done, he’ll next do Fire and Ice, the animated project that he’s been developing that’s a remake of the 1983 Frank Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi movie of the same name, inspired, of course, by Frazetta’s iconic art works.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Rodriguez made the announcement, and spoke about the timing, saying:

“That’s in the works to go right into after Sin City, Frank Frazetta’s Fire and Ice. We’re almost done with the script; we’ve got it pretty much 70 percent there. I’m really excited about that one.

I think the timing is going to work out just right, and we’ll have a finished script in the next month or so. So we can start lengthier pre-production and we can go right into preproduction — well, we’re actually in pre-production, sort of, or we’ve been doing a lot of the pre-visualization. But that would be the next thing after Sin City.”

The plan is to make the movie in a similar way to the high stylization of Sin City, so that, as Rodriguez puts it, it will be as if “…you stepped into one of his [Frazetta’s] paintings.” He also added that “For Frazetta fans, this will be the ultimate tribute to what he did, and inspired so many people. I think it’s going to be pretty powerful when people see it.”

Are you looking forward to Rodriguez’s Fire and Ice? What do you think about using the same style as Sin City for it?
