James Cameron Says He Will No Longer Make Non-‘Avatar’ Films
  |  @   |

When talking about giving up the live-action Battle Angel to another director, James Cameron said that you would have to pry it from his cold dead hands. Well it seems that won’t be completely necessary, because the director sees himself being committed to making only Avatar movies.

In an interview with the New York Times, Cameron said that he only sees himself making Avatar films and focusing on documentary work. So that Battle Angel movie everyone has been waiting for will have to wait or just hope that he relinquishes Battle Angel and hand it off to another director. In fact, Cameron sees himself going beyond the generic trilogy of films and making an Avatar 4.

Here’s the quote:

I’ve divided my time over the last 16 years over deep ocean exploration and filmmaking. I’ve made two movies in 16 years, and I’ve done eight expeditions. Last year I basically completely disbanded my production company’s development arm. So I’m not interested in developing anything. I’m in the “Avatar” business. Period. That’s it. I’m making “Avatar 2,” “Avatar 3,” maybe “Avatar 4,” and I’m not going to produce other people’s movies for them. I’m not interested in taking scripts. And that all sounds I suppose a little bit restricted, but the point is I think within the “Avatar” landscape I can say everything I need to say that I think needs to be said, in terms of the state of the world and what I think we need to be doing about it. And doing it in an entertaining way. And anything I can’t say in that area, I want to say through documentaries, which I’m continuing. I’ve done five documentaries in the last 10 years, and I’ll hopefully do a lot more.

So there you have it. The answer seems to confirm that we won’t be seeing Battle Angel anytime soon. Nor will we see him produce the stalled At the Mountains of Madness. It’s rather sad to see him stick just to one project, but given the amount of time that was spent perfecting the look and feel of the first Avatar film, I can’t say that I am surprised to see him stick with just making Avatar films from here on out. There are a lot of locations on Pandora that audiences have yet to see, and all that deep sea exploration that Cameron has been doing recently will be the foundation of Avatar 2. But as to where Cameron could take audiences after the events of Avatar 2, that remains to be seen.
